A few months after the armistice of Cassibile of 1943, when Italy dissolved the alliance from Germany and surrendered to the Allies, the nation is experiencing a period of great struggle with the German army that feeling betrayed, invaded Rome, all the while Giorgio Manfredi, a man prominent in the resistance seek shelter from the nazi army, by the knowledge of the Pina, a woman next to the wedding and Don Pietro, the local parish priest and a man respected all over the country.

According to many probably one of the best films, if not the best film neo-realist Italian, a story that wants to tell the historical facts of that time, and in particular to what we're experiencing in the years before the liberation of Rome by the Allies, and the brutality that the nazi army inflicted on the poor people after the famous armistice.

A story that made famous both Anna Magnani (will win the Silver Ribbon), who after this will have a great future being called by the various productions, and an actor like Aldo Fabrizi, he too will reach fame with this film and probablmete was among his best film performances.

The famous Magnani scene

Just Magnani, the figure of the woman with a strong and sometimes rude character is relevant, but then it was revealed a woman of pure sweetness. Although she was never the typical woman who cared or wore makeup a lot, she always wanted to show her peasant and romanaccio style, which can not get used to city life and that despite everything was respected by her fellow citizens; the strange beauty that she wore although he was not always in order, but, above all, the brilliance of its ideas and the role of the woman is ready for everything to help others, and play against the greatest have made her known around the world, and in this movie you see the beginning of his essence that struck me as a woman and as an actress because of the role that showed in the film at the bottom of the wore on and off set. The famous scene of the race to the future husband Francesco as he is taken away by the Germans and the subsequent death, remains among the best scenes of the actress.

Aldo Fabrizi is Don Pietro

The same I can say about the great Aldo Fabrizi, the part of the good and loyal Don Pietro, is the parish priest that we would all like, his bizarre face and his small eyes that bring you the smile involve you in everything and for everything, he himself will act as a conduit for Manfredi in saving him from the Germans by putting His way of posing above all with little Marcello, the son of Pina (A. Magnani), it is a beautiful relationship, a kind of mentor for the boy trying to take him to the right path already that the child like all the boys of his age are rebellious, and think the end that will make Just Don Pietro, it is Strange tears, in my opinion they should have given them some prize for the role.

Roberto Rossellini (left) during filming

But the consecration more goes to the director, Roberto Rossellini, who with this film produces the best work of his career, and this is verified by the fact that the subsequent films have not had the same impact of this; the great Roberto has risked bringing the cinema of the facts as the last years of the war, a topic that he could bring criticism on the subject, which, however, thanks to his talent was able to tell in the right way, without neglecting the true facts; his choice to sign two half-known actors such as Magnani (with whom he will begin a relationship) and Fabrizi was a gamble but fair for the characteristics of the film.

The film also speaks of the betrayal as the one of the beloved Marina Mari (Maria Machi) to Manfredi, that for a dose of the drug will unite with an agent of the Gestapo by sending him to death by torture, a woman who did not stand the pressure of being left by the engineer, and revenge; a role as double agent that reflects the wickedness of the same nazi army who, after being betrayed by the Italian army will do the same thing striking back. The relevant figure of the captain Hartman (Joop van Hulzen), a "bastard" who will be the antagonist, and the true enemy will unite seems to be a general to capture Manfredi, I was amazed by the role because in many things, the German army was so, and on this he wanted to play Rossellini.

Regarding the scenography, it encloses the beauty of Rome as the timeless city, which despite the occupation of the Germans has remained a majestic and beautiful city, which I will never stop praising and honoring for its historical and timeless beauty. The music composed by the acclaimed Renzo Rossellini, the brother of the director, and his assistant, carries a theme of melodies strong that refer to the facts of the war, and, above all, traces the various deaths of each character as to signify the brutality of the germans, a composer underestimated for his long career he has had. In a nutshell, a film that will remain in the annals of the history of Italian cinema, and a true example of an entire nation.
